‘Jessie, come and listen to this. The infamous father has arrived and Sarah doesn’t want him here,’ Brittany said a couple of hours later, after she had been down to the kitchen to get a drink.

‘Brit, you know I can’t go down there.’

‘It’s fine. They’re being so loud we can hear from the next landing. You’d probably be able to hear them from here if we opened the door. Anyway, if anyone comes we can always dart into Noah’s room,’ she said, wiggling her eyebrows at me. ‘Hurry up.’

I sighed, but had to admit I was more than a little intrigued to spy on them.

‘No Mike, you know you cannot stay for the ceremony. How many times do we have to go through this?’ My aunt’s voice was steadily rising. ‘In fact you shouldn’t even be here now. I don’t know what Saffy was thinking.’

‘Don’t you go blaming our daughter! She’s always caught up in your precious coven’s dramas and now she’s told me about how insecure she feels having this damned vampire in the house, so I took it upon myself to come over and check out the threat for myself.’

‘Now you’re being ridiculous. Jessica is no more of a threat than any young untrained witch or warlock,’ my aunt said.

‘I think not. Only last weekend Saffy told me how you struggled to control the circle’s power when Jessica connected with the earth force in the forest,’ he said.

‘Well, Saffy had no business to tell you that and it is not true. It may be true that Jessica does, as we suspected, have a strong natural connection with the circle’s power, but as the firstborn daughter of my elder twin that is to be expected. Susannah is just as powerful, from what I have seen.’

‘But Susannah is not here, is she? Your firstborn daughter decided to leave, just as Jessica’s mother did, and why would they do that if it’s such a nurturing environment, Sarah? Or is it because black magic runs in their veins, as I always suspected?’

‘Black magic is not inherited Mike, it is taught, as well you know. Neither Susannah nor Jessica is past redemption by any means.’

‘Saffy has told me of many times that Susannah bullied her when she was growing up, of spells she has cast that must be grey for sure, if not black, and now your younger daughter is having to take the flack. You expect so much of her, when all she wants is to have her old life back.’

‘You make it sound so simple Mike, but you were always very good at seeing things from one perspective. Now I know for certain that Susannah never bullied Saffy. Sure, there were sibling squabbles, but Susannah has her own reasons for leaving, which we are trying to work through, and if all goes well she will return, maybe tonight even and then Saffy can carry on at Harvard as planned.’

There was a pause and Brittany and I exchanged glances and began to creep back, away from the staircase, but just as we turned away they started up again.
